A work anniversary is one of the few moments where a company can say “we noticed” without it feeling forced. The gift doesn't have to be expensive. It has to be thoughtful, and it has to match the milestone.
Quick answer: give something useful and personal at every anniversary, and step up the value at milestone years. A good pattern is a thoughtful small gift at 1–3 years, a quality personalized item at 5 years, and a premium gift engraved with the employee's name and years of service at 10, 15 and 20+. In Canada, non-cash long-service awards for 5+ years of service can be tax-free up to $500 under a separate CRA rule.
Work anniversary gift ideas by milestone
A thank-you that shows you were paying attention
A handwritten note from their manager, plus something small they'll use: a good notebook, a tech pouch, or a coffee from their favourite local roaster. Typical budget: $25–$75.
Upgrade something they use every day
A better water bottle, a desk organiser, a quality sling bag for the commute. Small, practical upgrades land better than novelty items. Typical budget: $50–$100.
The first real milestone
This is where a premium, personalized gift makes sense — a work bag or tote engraved with their name and “5 years.” It's also the first anniversary that can qualify as a CRA long-service award (see below). Typical budget: $150–$250.
Something built to last another ten
A premium leather-detailed backpack, briefcase or tote, or quality carry-on luggage for the employee who travels. Engraving their name and years of service turns it into a keepsake. Typical budget: $200–$500.
Recognition the whole team sees
Pair a significant gift — a luggage set, an experience, or a personalized premium bag — with a public moment: a team lunch, a note from leadership, a story in the company newsletter. At this stage the recognition matters as much as the object.

The CRA long-service award rule
Canadian employers can give long-serving employees a non-cash award that isn't taxable, as long as:
- it's worth $500 or less (including taxes);
- it's not cash or a gift card;
- it recognizes at least five years of service; and
- at least five years have passed since the employee's last long-service award.
This limit is separate from the regular $500 annual limit for non-cash gifts and awards. So in a 5-, 10- or 15-year anniversary year, an employee can receive a long-service award and still receive holiday or other non-cash gifts up to $500 that year, both tax-free. For the full rules, read the $500 rule: what Canadian employers can give staff tax-free, and confirm your program with your accountant.
How to make an anniversary gift feel personal
- Engrave their name and years. “A. Patel · 10 Years” on a metal plate turns a company gift into theirs.
- Add a real note. Two specific sentences from their manager about what they've contributed beats any card template.
- Get the date right. A gift that arrives on the anniversary says more than a bigger one that arrives a month late. Keep a few branded pieces in stock so you're never rushing.
- Brand quietly. Your logo can be there, but the gift is about them.
We set up anniversary programs this way: your branded bags are produced once and kept with us in Toronto, and when a milestone comes up you send us the name and the years. We engrave, box and ship it. Programs start at 10 pieces. For other recognition moments, see our guides to employee appreciation gifts and corporate gift ideas in Canada.
