Corporate gifting in Canada has a reputation problem. Most of what gets handed out — the stress ball, the lanyard, the mug with a logo — ends up in a drawer within a month. The companies that get real value from their gifting budget do the opposite: they give fewer, better things that people use every day.

We've designed bags in Toronto since 2011 and have produced custom gifts for companies including CIBC, Enbridge, Google and the Government of Canada. This guide brings together everything we've written on corporate gifting in Canada — for employees, clients, new hires and events — with budgets, CRA tax rules and ordering timelines in one place.

Quick answer: the best corporate gift ideas in Canada are useful, well-made items people keep — a premium work bag, quality tech accessories, or a gift box built around one good item rather than lots of filler. Keep employee gifts non-cash and under $500 a year so they stay tax-free under CRA rules, check client gift policies before you send, and order custom-branded gifts at least 8–10 weeks before you need them.

How to choose a corporate gift

Whoever the gift is for, four questions do most of the work:

  • Will they use it every week? Daily-use items — a bag, a good notebook, a tech organiser — keep paying back the cost. Consumables are gone in days.
  • Does the quality reflect your company? A cheap gift says something about you. Pick something the recipient could look up and recognize as premium.
  • Is the branding quiet enough to carry? People happily carry a logo on a metal plate or a debossed leather patch. They won't carry a giant screen print.
  • Does it fit the rules? Employee gifts have CRA tax limits; many clients (especially in finance, government and healthcare) have gift-value caps or ban alcohol and food.

Corporate gift ideas by budget

Budget per person Good options Best for
Under $50 Local craft chocolate or coffee, a quality notebook, a small tech pouch Large teams, thank-you notes, event attendees
$50–$100 Tech organisers, a toiletry or travel case, a good sling bag Team holiday gifts, onboarding kit add-ons
$100–$250 A premium backpack or work tote with your logo and their name Key clients, senior hires, leadership teams, milestones
$250+ Carry-on luggage, a multi-piece travel set Long-service awards, top accounts, board and partner gifts

For employees, remember that the CRA limit is $500 per person per year across all non-cash gifts, so a $250 holiday gift leaves room for one more gift that year.

Branded corporate gifts people actually keep

The best branded gifts are products people would buy for themselves, with the branding applied quietly. That's the idea behind our corporate program: we put your logo on bags that sell at full retail on their own merit, from just 10 pieces.

Corporate gifts and Canadian tax rules

The CRA rules shape almost every employee gifting program in Canada:

  • $500 a year, non-cash. Employees can receive non-cash gifts and awards worth up to $500 (including taxes) per year tax-free. Anything over $500 is a taxable benefit.
  • Cash and most gift cards are taxable. Cash and near-cash gifts are always taxable, and most gift cards count as near-cash.
  • Long-service awards get a separate $500. A non-cash award for at least five years of service, given no more than once every five years, has its own $500 limit on top of the annual one. See our work anniversary gifts guide.

We cover the details, including when a gift card can qualify, in the $500 rule: what Canadian employers can give staff tax-free. Quebec employers should also check Revenu Québec's rules. Client gifts follow different rules, so check with your accountant on deductibility.

When to order corporate gifts

Custom-branded gifts take longer than most people expect. For branded bags, plan on a free mockup within 48 hours, a physical sample in one to two weeks, then six to eight weeks of production. That means:

  • December holiday gifts: order by early October.
  • Employee Appreciation Day (first Friday in March): order by mid-December.
  • Onboarding and client gifts: set up a program once and keep branded stock on hand, so you can send gifts year-round without a rush.

Missed the window? Unbranded gifts from stock ship much faster — ask us what's achievable for your date.
