This question comes up constantly, and the honest answer has three parts.
Full-grain leather ages beautifully and weighs a lot. A real leather laptop bag can add a kilogram before you put anything in it. It also darkens and softens over years in a way no synthetic replicates. If you value that and your commute is short, it's a genuine pleasure to own.
Leather and Canadian winters are an awkward match. Untreated leather marks with road salt and water, and needs conditioning to stay right. Plenty of people accept that; plenty of people discover it in February and regret the purchase.
Coated leather is the middle path, and it's what we use. To be clear about our own bags: the Envoy uses matte coated-leather panels over ballistic nylon rather than full-grain leather throughout. That gets you the visual weight and hand-feel of leather with far better weather behaviour and roughly half the mass. It will not develop the patina a full-grain bag does — that's the trade.
If what you actually want is full-grain leather that ages, buy a dedicated leather goods maker. If what you want is a bag that looks considered and survives a Toronto winter, coated leather over nylon is the better engineering answer.
